Grammatikus – A Game of Words

There are plenty of people who make their living purely from playing music. I am not quite one of those people. But unlike most other musicians with a ‘day gig’ my other job is one of the other types of jobs people typically have to work another job to support {phew} creative writing!

My contract at the moment is working on this computer game, Grammatikus. It’s a fantasy game with RPG elements, designed for educational purposes. It’s about Grammar! The conceit is that there in the land of Gramadach all the place-names, characters and magical goings-on are built around the eight classic parts of speech and structural concepts of English.

The concept and initial story and character designs weren’t mine, but the teachers creating the game – through their company English Online – found themselves in the position of needing to concentrate on the lesson content and other aspects of the business, feeling they needed someone else to take over the story-writing duties.

Their head programmer was familiar with my work and appropriate interests (mythology, history and children’s literature for starters!) and suggested we set up a meeting. It took a while to sort things out, but eventually I was brought in to create new stories and characters for different sections of the game, and to edit some of the existing content.

It’s a pretty huge job! There is basically a full separate game quest for each component of English, with a different storyline and set of goals, worksheets, games and tests for each. The immensity of the undertaking never fails to impress me, and each time the company contracts another segment I feel glad to be working on such a cool project.

The game is designed to be used for an Australian Year 7 high-school program, but can also be tailored to suit either slightly older or younger students, or similar school levels for other English speaking countries.

Teachers can apply for a demo-license, so if you’re a teacher looking for a new resource – or just want to check out some of my other type of work – get onto them and join Grammatikus in his noble quest for knowledge and freedom for all of Gramadach.
